  • How did you learn English? From reading children’s books, right? When I was learning Spanish, I went and got a ton of children’s books in Spanish and translated them and read them over and over so I could grasp it at a basic level with actual meaning rather than isolated words.

  • Before You Know It has a free download that
features lots of good vocabulary items.
Try to find a very simple newspaper or magazine
or some good children’s books for reading.

  • start with some Spanish children’s books-sounds strange but that’s how the kids learn. Also, if you know anyone who speaks Spanish ask them to have really basic conversations with you. Also, try restaurants and bodegas where the owners speak Spanish and ask them to help you. Most people are very happy to help beginners in their language.

Find some songs you like and ask a spanish speaker to translate them, when you learn the words and sing along you will be using new vocabulary and also learning some grammatical structures.

I had a decent experience learning portuguese at
They basically let you engage native speakers for free and it’s a neat way to learn new words and phrases. It might be a good dimension that you could add to your class. Get your students to engage/interact with spanish speakers on this site and come back with new words and phrases that they have learnt and share their insights with the rest of the class.

    Good luck!
