Does anyone who is fluent in another language say spanish and if english was your first language, do you say the spanish word in english in your head? Or do you just get use to the spanish language and your thoughts are in spanish?

  • my native tongue is spanish….and while i was learning it i did think of stuff in spanish then in english…but now after 7 years….i think i dream i everything in english! lol…i dont have to think in spanish first and then english to say something….u know there is a saying that the day that u dream in the language u are learning, that is the day when u know it. lol. just a saying tho lol

  • This is actually a bad habit to get into. Once you start progressing into more advance (or intermediate) Spanish you’ll find yourself translating words and sentences in your head and it’ll slow you down. I did this in the very, very beginning of my Spanish lessons and after being told this by my teacher I got into the habit of learning the words and phrases for what they are. But I think this came with constant repetition of certain words where it got to the point when I didn’t need to translate in my head, I just already “knew” them.

So, I guess it’s okay sometimes (in the very beginning) but it’s a bad habit and it really does slow you down a little bit when you’re reading and when people are talking to you.
