Once you start progressing into more advance (or intermediate) Spanish you'll find yourself translating words and sentences in your head and it'll slow you down. I did this in the very, very beginning of my Spanish lessons and after being told this by my teacher I got into the habit of learning the words and phrases for what they are. But I think this came with constant repetition of certain words where it got to the point when I didn't need to translate in my head, I just already "knew" them. So, I guess it's okay sometimes (in the very beginning) but it's a bad habit and it really does slow you down a little bit when you're reading and when people are talking to you.
