I’ve learned English 15 years ago and when some English speaker comes to visit me here in Brazil, at the beginning I find it hard to speak, then when we go out, take some drinks, I’m fluent again, like a native speaker, they all comment about the transformation, hehehe.

- depending on where you go, wonder off from your “group,” but close to your hotel.. etc
- talk to the cashier, ask a person next to you if he’s ever tried these chips.. soda etc.
- that will get you starting to communicate with regular people.
- sit on a bench in a small plaza/jardín. I love just sitting and looking, although I have no need to improve my spanish..
- if you smoke and you see someone smoking ask for a light etc.
- don’t endanger yourself, be confident.
- but go shopping to regular malls… interact with the sales people.
- go to bars! bars are wonderful, go early so it’s not so noisey.. jaja in méxico the bar scene starts at 11.30, since they close at 04.00.
- I’m a native spanish speaker who never went above conversational.. until the 16 I decided to become fluent. I’ve been going to méxico every year since and I can tell you that interacting is the only way to learn a language.
