Instituto Cervantes Nueva York [ICNY].
The ICNY (“Cervantes Institute of New York”) was established by the Spanish government in 1991 as an official institution dedicated to teaching the Spanish language and the co-offical languages of Spain (e.g. Catalan, Basque, Aranese, Galician, etc.). The institution also serves to promote the cultures and traditions of the Castilian and Spanish-speaking countries, and is named after the greatest historical writer in the Spanish language – Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra.
The ICNY is a corresponding member of the Real Academia Española [RAE] (“Royal Spanish Academy”) which is the official royal institution that regulates the use of the Castilian and Latin-American Spanish languages from it’s base in Madrid, Spain. The language as it is taught at the ICNY is further regulated through the RAE’s union of the Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española [ASALE] (“Association of Spanish Language Academies”) in Mexico.
The current Director of the ICNY is Eduardo Lago Martínez (1987-2006; 2007- ).
