  • They are foolish and have no idea how business works. Any business that wants to succeed needs to market their products to as wide a group as possible.

  • jl:

What is Spanish for “If your money is green, you’re welcome in my store”? I think If they want to live here, it’s in their own best interest to learn English, but if I want their money, I should learn at least some Spanish.

  • Apples and Oranges my friend.
Its one thing to speak the language of a nation you are selling to, so if you have some big shipment to Mexico, Central America, etc….then by all means, communicate with them , and in thier language to make things easier.
But in marketing here in America, it isn’t about the success of a business. The BIGGER issue is why are there so many people in in America that can’t speak the language ?
We may have a bunch of spineless politicians that are whipped with political correctness and won’t make ENGLISH the official language of the nation, but it certainly is the unofficial language. And if you make things easier for people, particularly for illegals, they have no incentive to learn, they have no incentive to assimilate to our culture or fit in. Many of the illegals have effectively come to America for a better life as they drain our social services and economy but have transplanted thier own culture and ways within OUR country. They aren’t American’s, they aren’t even good immitations.
go to and read about the upity latinos whom got angry about AMerican-Mexicans wearing American flag apparel on Cinco De Mayo or try
how those same protesting latino’s, many probably illegal or anchor babies treated a man in a wheel chair.
The general disrespect of latino’s toward America is very apparent and needs to be put a stop to.

  • Americans are rightly upset that many illegal aliens and hispanics are making NO effort to learn English or assimilate.

  • Your question and additional information do not compute. Who are these individuals, and are you sure that they LOVE the free market? Perhaps the people you speak of despise their tax dollars being wasted on additional language government documents, and programs to deal with nonenglish-speaking peoples, ala ESOL programs forced upon school districts that are ran by liberals who waste money on nonsense anyway. I am sure that if these people ran a business, they would welcome all to purchase their wares, and would “market” to all. If they didn’t, well, they are just dumb and deserve to have a short-lived business.

  • It may be that many are annoyed that since this is America and people of other nationalities want to live in this country they could at least speak english. This country should have one universal language: english. Speaking spanish has nothing to do with a free market unless your stockbroker only speaks spanish.

  • Spanish language newspapers and television stations promote an attitude of non-assimilation, where hispanics live here 20 years or more and never bother to learn the native language.

And in the case of Mexicans in the U.S., promotes a dangerous separatism that threatens U.S. sovereignty over the U.S. southwest.

If we are to keep a unified nation, we need one language and culture. And if your loyalties are elsewhere and you won’t assimilate, go back where you came from, and good riddance.

Kosovo is a precursor for what is happening on the Mexican border.

  • It doesn’t matter to me. But if I don’t understand what they’re talking about, they won’t be able to get my business. My problem isn’t with people speaking Spanish, it’s about people who can’t speak and understand English when I need to talk to them. If I need to have someone fix something in my apartment, I need to communicate with this person to tell him what is wrong and listen to his response. I don’t think we should make English the “national language” and force government documents to be English only. But I don’t think people shouldn’t be hired for jobs where they have to interact with the general public if they can’t speak or understand basic English – having an accent is ok.

  • Certain people are xenophobes.

Some are Democrats. I am conservative and my previous boss was a Democrat. I would always speak the little spanish I knew with the customers and my boss didn’t like that. He was always complaining about “them mexicans!”

And you are 100% right about the free market.

BUT, sometimes Spanish marketing can be a sign of how many Spanish speaking folks are not learning English. It isn’t like it is wrong in & of itself. It is that it’s a sign of something that is not good. Biligualism is great but bilingual means two languages. And one of those two languages should be English.
