Is the Spanish Language very similar to Portuguese ?

spanish language
RuNDmC asked:

I’d like to learn Portuguese because I am and don’t know how since I was born in the U.S. and have never been there although I’d like to but I would like to at least know the language to a certain extent where I can communicate with the people there after studying it for the next 2-3 yrs……problem is I think most universities don’t offer it to learn and it’s mostly like Spanish, and other languages

  • Well Portugal is right next to Spain so I guess they have some things in common.

  • It is similar enough that some universities offer a short course in “Portuguese for Spanish speakers”.

However, the languages are not mutually intelligible when spoken, the way some Scandinavian languages are. On the other hand, if you can read Spanish, you can probably read simple (newspaper level) Portuguese at about 75% comprehension if you learn around 100 vocabulary words.

The easiest way to learn it may be to exchange English and Portuguese lessons with a Portuguese-speaking student. Be aware that there are some differences between Brazilian and European Portuguese.

  • Yes, it is. We (Spanish and Portuguese) can understand each other, specially when the text is written, although usually the Portuguese understand better a Spaniard than the other way around.

But we (I’m Portuguese) don’t like when people come to Portugal and speak Spanish, because we know some people think Portugal is some kind of Spanish colony and we obviously don’t like that…

    You can learn Portuguese here:

Do not confuse Portuguese with Brazilian Portuguese. If you go to a university to learn this language, be sure it is actually European Portuguese, because they are different, more than US English and “English English” (from England).

After you learn a little bit, if you want to talk to someone to see how you’re doing, you can contact me (go to my profile and send me an e-mail, if you want to).

    Good luck =)
