Yes, why yes it is.
They aren’t different accents. The languages are very different, but they are derived from the same language (Latin) – they are Romance languages – and have some similarities sharing a similar phonological system.

And Switzerland.
One’s spoken in Italy, one’s spoken in Spain+Latin America.
Stupid questions get stupid answers.
think about it. italian… and spanish.
they are as similar as English and Dutch.
get the idea?
for a Spanish speaker, Italian is easy to hear. but differences in vocabulary are colossal, therefore it’s not easy to understand in the 60% (a rough, subjective estimate) of the times.
About 1,600 years, since that is when they separated from Latin.

Me, I’m Italian and I can’t speak Spanish.
Guess why?
They’re completely different.
How anyone can even think that two different languages are different just in the ACCENT???
They have the same origin, yes, they both derive from Latin and they are “romance languages” like French and Romanian but I don’t think you would ever ask if French, Italian, Spanish and Romanian differ just in the accent!!!
It’s like German and English, as someone said.
