Sadly it is not the Americans job to learn the language of those who come here but the other way around. When I go to another country I try to learn enough of the language to get by but you seem to think that everyone else should learn the language of those who come here instead. It's already the case that in many locations, people can't get jobs with local gov'ts such as the Dade County gov't if they aren't fluent in Spanish. The ability to be able to communicate with each other is very important. Look at Chinas (both the ROC and the PROC), they have both instituted programs to make Mandarin the national language! My wife is from the ROC and had to learn 2 languages in her country, English in this country along with Japanese. Her mother speaks a native tongue. Too many problems with different languages. There is also the cost involved! Everything in multiply languages cost money. It also drags down the education system when you have to explain things in two languages along with using monies for ESL classes that could be used for other things. If we should learn a second language shouldn't it be Mandarin? Mandarin is the most spoken language in the world!
