Learn Spanish as a Second Language
asked:
Learning a second language like Spanish for example, can be a daunting experience for a lot of people especially as many of us decide to learn a language later in life. It is a well known fact that an adult’s capacity for learning reduces with age, hence the lack of the term ‘adults’ in the saying ‘kids are like sponges’, but that doesn’t mean to say that it is impossible or difficult to learn a new language, in fact it’s quite the opposite.
But, why learn Spanish?
Learning Spanish as a Second Language.
The figures tell us that Learning Spanish would be the most sensible option when it comes to choosing a language to learn; it is the second most widely spoken language in the world after English with over half a billion speakers worldwide.
It is the primary language in more than 20 countries and a second language in many more including the US, home to over 40 million Spanish speakers which makes the US the fifth largest population of Spanish speakers in the world, with an estimated 17 million of those unable to communicate in English or at least not communicate very well!
The academic world is split as to the best way a language should be learned, many old school academics still believe that the student should learn the correct structure and grammar relating to a language before moving on to the practical implementation therefore protecting a language’s integrity. These purists however, are few and far between, with the vast majority of language scholars now believing that learning how to communicate through verbal interaction speeds up and enhances the understanding of any language let alone Spanish.

Most Popular Spanish Language Tips-When to Use Usted, Tú or Vos

Most Popular Spanish Tips – When to use Usted, Tú or Vos
As a teacher of Spanish as a Foreign Language I have had the opportunity to work in various language schools such as Conversa, Intensa and as an independent language instructor. During these 29 years, I have put together a list of questions asked by students from all over the World since 1982; the beginning of my teaching career.
Students have done research on, or have been told about the differences in the language when they travel from one country to the next especially when they travel to Central America and then to South America.
I will say that the difference between the second person singular pronouns in Spanish Usted, Tú and Vos -the equivalent of You-is the number one question on my list. Every single person I have taught Spanish has asked me this question thus by far an excellent question. After all, even those who have studied Spanish Grammar for years would like to know what is considered politically correct when they travel, unless someone is planning to stay in their hotel room and speak only to the staff.
Three different pronouns; No wonder everyone is afraid of studying Spanish! It is not as complicated as it seems. All we need is a simple explanation that is straight to the point.
Let’s begin by comparing the use of the subject pronoun You in English to the equivalent in Spanish-Usted, Tú, Vos used in Spain and Latin America.

It's Time to Learn the Spanish Language
asked:
The Spanish Language is extremely popular. Here are a few very interesting statistics…Spanish has at least 3 million native speakers each in 44 countries, making it the fourth most geographically widely spoken language behind English (112 countries), French (60 countries) and Arabic (57 countries). With 329 million native speakers, Spanish ranks as the world’s No. 2 language in terms of how many people speak it as their first language. If this is not enough reason to choose Spanish as your second language from a professional or personal point of view…have a read below for some very practical reasons.
I am 38 years old and was never really great at languages while at school. French was the chosen second language back then and, even though it is a beautiful language, I never managed to pick up enough to become comfortable speaking it to a native French speaker. I always regretted that.
My wife, 3 kids and I holiday most years on the island of Mallorca, just off the coast of Spain. Fantastic place with lots of fun activities.
Even though many of the natives speak english to a certain degree because they are catering for tourists, we always make a big effort to speak the Spanish Language while on holiday. It’s fun, the Spanish natives appreciate the effort and hey, why not learn a little along the way.
I remember the first year we holidayed there. We would rent a car and spend a couple of days touring to various parts of the island. We just wanted to get away from the places where tourists mainly concentrated and see more of how the local folks live and work. The problem was that even though the people in these areas were still very friendly, they had no reason to learn to speak english because they were not involved in the tourist industry, so it was a real struggle for us (and them). We’d go to a market where local produce was for sale…fruit/veg, cheese, breads and some artifacts made by the people from that area. It was so frustrating not having the spanish language or even the most basic spanish phrases to communicate with them.
