Why would anyone encourage their children to learn Spanish in high school?
alcor69_69 asked:
Same with French? Why are these the main languages taught in schools???
Why not encourage them to learn a language that will add value to their future…like Chinese? Give them a great advantage and teach them a language of business. It will make them extremely valuable in 20 years from now. What important business person only speaks Spanish or French? I see no value in it.
Why not make kids more competitive and give them a tool to aid their future? *** is wrong with the schools today?

Have you ever tried to learn a foreign language from those cassette and book sets?
PIX-ED asked:
I’m trying to get a head start learning Spanish before the new semester starts. I went to the library and took out one of those “easy learn while you drive” language sets which include 4 tape cassettes and a lesson guide. After playing the lessons over and over, I find that I have almost no retention of the language.
Am I doing something wrong or are these sets ineffective?
Any advice will be appreciated.

I am a teacher who works with many latino students. What is the best way to learn functional Spanish?
Amersmanders asked:
I would like to become fluent in Spanish somewhere down the road, but my main priority for right now is to learn enough Spanish to be able to communicate with my students’ mono-lingual parents. Are there any good books/tapes/cd-roms/dvds/etc. that would provide kind of a quick fix? I can read Spanish pretty well, but cannot speak, write or understand spoken Spanish very well.
I’m not interested in opinions about whether students should speak English in school; that was clearly not the question. I would like to communicate with my mono-lingual parents, so that their students have the best possible opportunities for success, and thus would like to know what the best way to learn Spanish quickly is, so that I can accomplish that. Also, I’d like to put out there that being literate in more than one language increases your intelligence, your ability to communicate and your ability to understand other cultures and other languages.
And, by the way, I teach Language Arts/Reading
