What are some really good books that help learning the Spanish language?

Antonio M asked:

I am already fluent in Spanish, but I lack the comprehension of common slang, and common phrases that one would hear living in a Spanish speaking world. Are there any good books for this? Please do not tell me about 501 verbs in Spanish or some Spanish dictionary, I would like titles of books that tells the “real” Spanish that is spoken outside of grammar texts produced in the United States.

I want to learn Spanish. What’s the best way to take advantage of my Spanish speaking friends?

Learn Spanish
11:17 asked:

I really want to learn Spanish and I’ve gotten into learning more than I ever had before.
My friends are all fluent in Spanish & English and they talk to me in Spanish all the time (commands, questions, etc.). Sometimes I understand, sometimes I don’t. Whenever I have a question on how to say something, I ask, but I want to get farther than that.
How do I take a better advantage of learning Spanish from them?

Do you know of any summer programs to learn spanish while teaching english/volunteering?

scarletfire asked:

Does anyone know of programs (that are not too expensive) where I could learn spanish while teaching english or volunteering? I only know basic spanish currently, but I would like to go next summer, and leave as close to fluent in Spanish as possible. I have heard that you can work for your room and board, and maybe even get paid, or get a living stipend. I also would like to go with my boyfriend, and live together.
