Okay, so I want to get into a prestigious international business program in college and I need to know a foreign language (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish). I’m already taking Spanish in high school so I figure I should just go with that, but this is a highly competitive program and I’ve heard if you take one of the lesser taught languages you have a higher chance of getting in. Should I stick with Spanish or learn a new language from scratch? What would be the best language to know?

I know that there is no official language in the US and that Spanish and other languages are used on official documents in some parts of the country. What I’m asking is whether some people are advocating for the right to use Spanish in the states’ legislative bodies or in the Congress and publishing all laws in Spanish too.

Why not encourage them to learn a language that will add value to their future…like Chinese? Give them a great advantage and teach them a language of business. It will make them extremely valuable in 20 years from now. What important business person only speaks Spanish or French? I see no value in it.
